The Origin of the C.O.O.L. Clinic
The C.O.O.L. Clinic began more than 40 years ago with six coaches crowded into Jim McNally’s office, studying film and sharpening the craft one detail at a time. When Bengals owner Mike Brown grew concerned that too many team secrets were being shared, the group simply moved down the road to the Clarion Hotel and kept going.
In 1995, Bob Wylie took over leadership of the clinic. Under his guidance it grew into what it is today: the premier offensive line clinic in football, with more than 450 coaches from the NFL, CFL, college, and high school attending each year.
The clinic’s iconic mushroom logo comes from Wylie himself:
“Offensive line coaches are always left in the dark and they always feed us s---. Well, that’s how mushrooms grow.”
That spirit of grit, humility, mastery, and camaraderie is the foundation of the C.O.O.L. Clinic and the heart of today’s Mushroom Society.
